A Magical Handfasting in the Forest – Mark & Laura’s Intimate London Ceremony

Forest wife and husband swap handfasting head-dress after tying the knot.

It all started with a single phone call.
“Hi, can you photograph a handfasting ceremony in a forest near Wanstead, London? Oh, and it’s in three weeks.”

Luckily, my diary was free — and just like that, I had my first handfasting wedding photography booking in London.

What Is a Handfasting Ceremony?

The word “handfasting” comes from the Old Norse handfesta, meaning “to strike a bargain by joining hands.” It’s an ancient Celtic and medieval custom symbolising a couple’s union — quite literally, “tying the knot.”

A Forest Wedding in Wanstead, London

The ceremony took place in a secluded woodland clearing, often used as a forest school. Beneath a large canvas porch, a small wood fire crackled, surrounded by fallen logs for seating. Bright ribbons fluttered gently between two ancient trees in the cool autumn breeze — the perfect natural setting for a forest wedding in London.

Mark dressed for the countryside, while Laura wore a beautiful sage green dress, shipped all the way from Lithuania for the day.

Capturing the Ceremony

As the celebrant invited the couple into the circle, friends gathered by the fire. After heartfelt vows and the exchange of rings, Laura and Mark’s hands were bound with brightly coloured ribbons — an elaborate knot that truly embodied the phrase “tying the knot.”

Guests then wrote down their wishes for the couple, offering them to the fire in a touching, symbolic close to the ceremony.

Why I Loved Photographing This Handfasting

This was my first time photographing a handfasting wedding, and I can see why more couples are embracing it. It brings mystery, meaning, and connection to the day — a gentle, participatory experience that draws everyone closer.

My favourite photo? A simple note drawn by a guest before placing it in the fire: two joined hearts under a crown, with the initials M and L. It perfectly captured the love, sincerity, and timeless symbolism of the day.
